A Love Letter to the Deliverers

So God was kind to the midwives and the people increased and became even more numerous. And because the midwives feared God, he gave them families of their own.
— Exodus 1:20-21 NIV

Earlier this year one of my close friends married the love of her life. As you can imagine, it was a time of great excitement. During this process, the Lord allowed me the great privilege of assisting her on the journey to her nuptials (you know, all the girl things). I was overjoyed to have a front row seat as God fulfilled His promises to her.

On the day of her wedding, it was my desire to make certain my friend had all that she needed. She was my central focus, but little did I know God had His eye on me.

After the ceremony and photoshoot, I embraced another friend of ours and as I did so, she began to pray. Initially, I was taken completely off guard, but as I listened I recognized the cadence of the words spoken. My friend wasn’t simply encouraging me, the Lord was clearly speaking through her. Her words lined up perfectly with Proverbs 11:25, “a generous person will prosper; whoever refreshes others will be refreshed.” In the months that followed I held on to these words diligently until one day the Lord granted me revelation, “You are a midwife.”

As He spoke I was immediately reminded of the midwives in the book of Exodus. These women were tasked with delivering the babies in Israel at a time of great oppression. The ruling Pharaoh of the time had made a decree that all male Hebrew babies should be murdered at the moment of their birth.

The king of Egypt said to the Hebrew midwives, whose names were Shiphrah and Puah, “When you are helping the Hebrew women during childbirth on the delivery stool, if you see that the baby is a boy, kill him; but if it is a girl, let her live.”

- Exodus‬ ‭1‬:‭15-‭16 ‭NIV‬‬

The Hebrew midwives disagreed with this order and secretly refused to follow this command. Instead they safely delivered each child, hence, breaking the law. The Bible makes it clear that these women feared God, and chose to face the wrath of Pharaoh rather than sin against God. As a result of their boldness, “God was kind to the midwives and the people increased and became even more numerous. And because the midwives feared God, he gave them families of their own.”

Later in the story, the midwives were confronted by Pharaoh, and essentially lied to cover their actions. Nevertheless, because of their faithfulness to the role that God had given them, God protected them from repercussions.

Then the king of Egypt summoned the midwives and asked them, “Why have you done this? Why have you let the boys live?” The midwives answered Pharaoh, “Hebrew women are not like Egyptian women; they are vigorous and give birth before the midwives arrive.”

- Exodus‬ ‭1‬:‭18 ‭NIV‬‬

It may be tempting to read this story and overlook these women. However, they play such a vital role in the deliverance of the children of Israel. They were hand selected by God to deliver deliverers. They were people that God trusted, to handle those who were delicate, fragile and in need of assistance.

Remember these things, Jacob, for you, Israel, are my servant. I have made you, you are my servant; Israel, I will not forget you.
— Isaiah 44:21 NIV

Perhaps, you are the intercessor, the voice of wise counsel in your circle, a prophet, a mother, or leader in your sphere of influence. Whatever your role may be, the Lord wants you to know that He has not forgotten you. He has equipped you with all you need to complete the taks of deliverance He’s given you. He’s kept a record of all of your diligent obedience and He will reward you.
